Flow Metrics App/Setting Up the App
Setting Up the App
Choose the Boards for Your Project or Process
- Select the board(s) that contain the data you want to visualize.
- Ensure that the board is structured properly to reflect your workflow.
Consider Board Stability and App Functionality
- The CFD app pulls data from Activity Logs in monday.com and tracks status changes over time to generate the cumulative flow chart.
- If your board has undergone many changes or has been restructured significantly, it may not provide reliable historical data for the CFD.
- Recommendation: Start with a new board and transfer the items from the old board to maintain data integrity.
- When you transfer items from one board to another, set up a simple automation to establish the starting status of those items. The app doesn't recognize previous status changes, so this automation helps maintain the status of items moved to the new board. If you need help setting up this automation, please contact us.
- Since the app relies on historical status changes, avoid deleting or making excessive modifications to existing statuses after setup.
- When setting up a new board for CFD analysis, ensure it remains stable to provide accurate and consistent data over time.
Define the Work Items Clearly
- It is important to ensure that each work item in the board is a meaningful unit for those analyzing the Cumulative Flow Diagram (CFD).
- Common work items across various industries include:
- Software Development: Features, user stories, bugs, tasks
- Manufacturing: Production orders, quality checks, maintenance tasks
- Marketing: Campaigns, content pieces, design tasks
- Construction: Building phases, material orders, inspections
- Healthcare: Patient appointments, procedures, lab tests
- Do not mix different types of work items in the same CFD, as it can distort the analysis.
Choose the Status Column and Organize the Workflow
- Select the status column you want to use for tracking progress.
- Organize the status options to match the flow of work in your process.
- The gray status ("Default") should always be the entry point in the system.
- The order of statuses should go from top to bottom, starting with the default gray status at the top and ending with the "done" stage at the bottom.
Choose the Dates for the CFD Chart
- Select the date range that you want to display in the Cumulative Flow Chart.
